Open Decision-Making

In a team, how should you make decision most effectively?

I have been thinking about this, and I think the answer to this is Open Decision-Making.

Basically you;

  • Make sure people agree with the problem or goal for the decision
  • Ask for input from everyone
  • Lay out the arguments for and against a conclusion to everyone
  • Announce the decision widely

Here is few tips I got from the linked article;

Everyone should feel part of the process, buy-in!

Asking for input also improves buy-in: people who have been consulted about a decision feel better about it, even if the decision goes against their input.

If people don't agree on the problem or the goal, they are unlikely to agree on the solution.

Don't allow arguments to be repeated.

The best decisions are recognized, not made.

Your goal should be to eliminate surprise while announcing the decisions.
